3 Gym Buddy Benefits

Happy Sunday dear reader!

When you become a regular at the gym, you soon start making friends between sets: a nod here, a smile there, and before you know it you have a gym buddy to work out with! Today, I will be sharing 3 benefits of having a workout partner:


For me, working out can become tedious and boring especially after a long day when I’d rather go home and stare at my white walls. Having a gym buddy has motivated me to do more than I would have done on my own. A gym buddy tells you to keep going and the rest of the time, you keep going so you don’t embarrass yourself by stopping! Your partner’s zeal can be contagious pushing you to challenge yourself more than you would have on your own.


Putting together a routine for the day can sometimes feel like a chore. Sometimes doing something for yourself is not as rewarding as the motivational memes say. A gym partner can actually suggest workouts you wouldn’t have thought of before. My new gym buddy had me running 5 km! During the week! I ran the 5 km twice this week, guys and just missed my personal best by 21 seconds! I also got to share my own workouts which she loved! we both got some variety out of our session! While I didn’t really do anything brand new with my gym partner, having someone else to workout with added a new spin to the work I was are putting in, with much less rest time!


Because we are not islands, it is rewarding and fulfilling to have someone next to you who feels the pain as much as you do. Someone who is as challenged as you are by the workout you have both put together. It’s really good sometimes just to have someone next to you panting, “I’m dying!” as you trudge along! It’s such a great form of affirmation!

Well, those are the 3 things for today! Get yourself a gym partner, dear reader! It may change your gym life for the better!

Parkrun: Bez Valley

Happy Sunday erbody!

I’m looking forward to this week. I’m staring down the barrel of the last week of the first term of the year! Teaching at a three-term school has its perks but we pay for it in other ways, i.e a much longer term than four terms schools! Aaaanyway! In 5 sleeps, I will switch off my alarm for 28 days straight!

So Parkrun has been going well! Yesterday was my 20th run and I can’t wait to hit 25 at the end of May! Every Saturday when I run, I see at least 5 runners with the Tshirt with 50 on the back and it’s very encouraging that I am edging closer to that t-shirt for myself every weekend that I show up!

Yesterday, the route was switched up a bit in the spirit of April fools, and we ran the race backwards this time! I love having a routine but switching things up from time to time makes things interesting in life!

I think it’s important to enjoy the little pleasures life throws at us. We dwell too much on the bad sometimes and miss out on the good!

So this week, I hope you take a moment every day to smell the roses, appreciate all those little things that take away the sting of the bad. All those little things add up and before you know it, you’re looking at a beautiful life again😉

Beast Mode

Hey everyone!

Another Wednesday has rolled by and I’m so glad you’re here!

I’ve had a pretty good and productive week with a wealth of new knowledge. How has your week been so far?!

Tonight I wanna talk about gym life; one of my favourite things to do for fun and also for that dream body! For me, working out and being fit is the only thing that makes me feel good in my own skin. I hope to do it for as long as my body will allow!

I don’t sweat, I sparkle!

So, a few weeks ago I started doing parkrun. Check out my post about that here. I must say, it humbled me! I tell you, just because you can run a lot of kilometres on the treadmill does not mean the ground will be easier. On the treadmill, your legs are merely responding to the pull of the belt. I barely lift my legs to get going. The ground, on the other hand, is merciless! You are completely on your own and propelling yourself forward is all on you! I definately did more sweating than sparkling out there!

Look like a beauty train like a beast!

I refused to be discouraged ( even though I actually was)! So, this week I took to running outside on Monday and today to get myself ready for Saturday. I got some tips from fellow parkrunners who had to slow down to my granny pace and push me to keep going – capitalise on the downhills and straights by picking up the pace a little bit and breathe as much as possible through your nose.

Monday was gruelling but today went much better. I’m proud of myself for showing up and giving it my best and I can’t wait to see how I do this coming Saturday! I’ll let you know how it goes🙂

So I guess the lesson is very clear: Nothing that we accomplish comes easily or without hard work. Sometimes you have to go back to the drawing board and replan; It’s part of what makes life such an adventure!

5 Things I Liked about Gillloy’s Parkrun

Evening Erbody!

Wow, that was close! I almost didn’t make it today!

Let’s get straight to it! I did a parkrun yesterday morning. It is a 5km run that is done every Saturday. Here’s what I thought:

1.It’s International!

I don’t know about you, but I love being a part of something that’s bigger than me! Did you know that parkruns take place in 20 countries accross 5 continents every Saturday morning? At 8am all over the world people are running!

2. Rise and Run!

8 in the morning sounds super early, especially for a Saturday, but the last thing I want to do on a Friday night is go out partying! So, for me 8am is the perfect time. I’m home by 9 and I can go back to bed or have a Saturday like everybody else🙂

3.So Much Support!

This one’s specific to this parkrun. At every kilometre, Gillooly’s had one of their volunteers shouting encouragments to keep going! It was such a boost!

4. Group Work

Even if you attend a parkrun alone, you are still doing the run with hundreds of other people. I kept tracking myself according to the granny ahead of me or the walking children behind me. I loved the sense of community!

5. Fitness Goals

I guess this one is obvious. Everyone is in it for different reasons, but for me it was nice to run on the ground as opposed to the treadmill which makes running easier in some ways. Running long distance is really effective outside!

I’m really curious to see the progress I make in the next few weeks. I’ll keep you posted!

Good evening everyone! Well, it’s really morning and I can’t sleep so you will have to listen to my ramblings, sorry not sorry!

The paunch came out of nowhere; all of a sudden protruding around the midsection. HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?!

So now the game plan has to change. Now I take chisel to statue and work with an intention to mould and create the body I want. The one I had before.

When Gym is Life

I’m grateful for my new gym instructor! He loves a good workout and the satisfaction of gains. My mindset about working out has completely changed. It used to be a non commital commitment that took me there 3 times a week at at least at an hour per session. My new gym buddy gave me a hunger by challenging me more. I tested myself and was suprised and how much more I can endure. I’m so much better than I knew, so much stronger and durable. I like that.

Even though it is the festive season when we, the miners of Johannesburg, head back to our homelands to enjoy the spoils of our work, I am still determined to maintain my hard work. I am determined to try new ways of working out and seeing how I smash those goals! I’m so excited!!
