The Eatout – La Boqueria, Parktown North

I bet you thought Eatout had faded out of my list of favourite things, right? Think again! My village and I have been quietly going about our business since the last time I blogged about our monthly outings over a year ago! I’m here to share about last night’s adventure!

The Spot

This month’s restaurant is LaBoqueria on 3rd avenue in Parktown North, Johannesburg. Make sure you book a table well in advance because this joint is always, and I mean always fully booked! The space is wide and spacious with an upstairs area that is divided into two levels. This provides some privacy for those dinner parties without completely shutting you out from clinking glasses, laughter and the promising aroma of delicious food as it gets carried to other tables; you know, the bustling Joburg vibe we all know and love! There is an outside area as well and a little smoking corner for the nicotine lovers. Potplants hang in the upstairs area where we were seated and against the walls are old-school cabinets where the glasses and china are kept. All these small touches create a sense of home while the warm lighting in the high ceiling gives an air of elegance to the space.

The Service

Our waiter was very well informed and recommended the best in drink and food. He striked a good balance between being available for our every whim and an unintrusive presence in our area. Though he got a drink or two incorrect (we’re a noisy crowd that doesn’t order in order!), they were very quickly rectified. One of our dishes was late by only 4 minutes and we only knew this because the manager came to inform us and offered a free drink to compensate for the wait.

The Favourites

Overall, the food was great, but what really stood out for us was the Rock Shrimp Burger – yes, shrimp in a bun! It’s also a good idea to try out 2 or 3 tappas as a main meal, we try this often so that we can have a taste of as many dishes as our stomachs can hold! The paella is a definite must try as well if the pork belly doesn’t tickle you fancy. They have a wide range to choose from and worth every penny spent!

Well, there you have it! Our 2 cents worth on this restaurant we found in the heart of Joburg! Try it out and tell us what you think 🙂

Better Than Me

No one knows how to lift my spirits better than me.Just put me behind the wheel and give me an adventure to embark on.

No one knows how to make my heart flutter better than me. Play me something beautiful, progressions with minors and husky voices and words that sing what I feel.

No one takes care of me better than me. Give me my matchbox flat, flavours to mix in a pot that nourish my belly and my soul.

No one calms me better than me. Make the room quiet and leave me to my own devices.

No one knows me better than me and no one loves me better than me because I’m all I’ve got…

Ahead

No alarm clock had a hand in waking her up this morning. The crack around her bedroom doorframe was the only indication that the day had begun. It is officially the first day of school break. As she stretched in bed, she thought of the day that stretched ahead. All the possibilities, all the choices that are hers to make lay ahead. It was gonna be a good day filled with little adventures. And she was looking forward to it.

I Slay!

This week I feel like a winner -a Boss! I’m Slaying! I’ve come to realise that I am the adventurous type. I love to try new things and seeing how well I fair in that adventure, which is why I enjoy going to the gym so much.

Every day I get stronger and my body can do more than my mind could fathom. I’ve tried just about everything over there!

The latest thing is taking on challenges that my gym-instructor friend throws at her followers from time to time. I managed to complete one particularly difficult challenge and couldn’t help but share it with my own followers – one of them answered the call!

So now we are long distance gym buddies. He gave me a weights challenge to do today and I, in turn, handed him one too. I’m proud to anounce that I sit here, arms as limp as a dead weight, but challenge completed and a stupid grin on my face! 💪💪💪💃💃💃

I am Boss! I am slaying, ya’ll!

The Eat-Out Club

Once a month,  a group of people from different walks of life who know each other haphazardly or through someone else or on purpose, meet at a specifically picked corner of Gauteng to break bread, laugh, hug and celebrate life. Here is how it started and now works:

Once upon a time, a small group of friends decided it would be nice to go out for dinner from time to time. It would be a round robbin type of set up and the restaurant would be decided through name picking out of a hat or a bowl or a plate. At the end of the first dinner date together, the name of the person who would be picking the next eat out venue was picked. And so the Eat-Out Club was born! This concept is awesome for various reasons:

To The Bat-Mobile!
For us, every month is an adventure! We’ve been everywhere; from the  northern suburbs to the “dodgy” south and everywhere in between. From the oldest pub in the city, to the middle of the city all the way to the Capital City! Waze has become our closest friend and Uber is a close contender!

NomNomNomNomNom!
Our mouths have been to some amazing countries as well. We’ve tried French, Portuguese, Greek, Mexican (my favourite!!),Indian (love!!) and the likes. Sometimes our mouths stay home. We have steak so rare they mooo, ribs that leave your face stained and your heart content or the creamiest pastas in existance! We’ve had desserts you can set on fire, marshmellows piled on a pizza bread and, once, good old fashioned custard and jelly!

Good friends
At the end of the day, adventures are no fun without someone to manage the car tunes! Adventures are boring to take alone, and so we get lost so our ninjas can come to our rescue – as ninjas do! Without laughter and chatter and hugs and holding hands and love, even the best cuisine is bland and tasteless. I diarise Eat Out. I carefully pick out an outfit as though I’m going on a first date! We talk about our jobs, our studies, our workouts. We plan weekends away, random braais and Christmas lunches. We share books, recipes, rituals, wifi codes, gym challenges and so many nifty tricks that make us better humans!

I’ve grown to love these people. They fill my heart with warmth, my mouth with laughter and my spirit with contentment. This is my village.
