Ahead

No alarm clock had a hand in waking her up this morning. The crack around her bedroom doorframe was the only indication that the day had begun. It is officially the first day of school break. As she stretched in bed, she thought of the day that stretched ahead. All the possibilities, all the choices that are hers to make lay ahead. It was gonna be a good day filled with little adventures. And she was looking forward to it.

I Slay!

This week I feel like a winner -a Boss! I’m Slaying! I’ve come to realise that I am the adventurous type. I love to try new things and seeing how well I fair in that adventure, which is why I enjoy going to the gym so much.

Every day I get stronger and my body can do more than my mind could fathom. I’ve tried just about everything over there!

The latest thing is taking on challenges that my gym-instructor friend throws at her followers from time to time. I managed to complete one particularly difficult challenge and couldn’t help but share it with my own followers – one of them answered the call!

So now we are long distance gym buddies. He gave me a weights challenge to do today and I, in turn, handed him one too. I’m proud to anounce that I sit here, arms as limp as a dead weight, but challenge completed and a stupid grin on my face! 💪💪💪💃💃💃

I am Boss! I am slaying, ya’ll!

The Eat-Out Club

image

Once a month,  a group of people from different walks of life who know each other haphazardly or through someone else or on purpose, meet at a specifically picked corner of Gauteng to break bread, laugh, hug and celebrate life. Here is how it started and now works:

image

Once upon a time, a small group of friends decided it would be nice to go out for dinner from time to time. It would be a round robbin type of set up and the restaurant would be decided through name picking out of a hat or a bowl or a plate. At the end of the first dinner date together, the name of the person who would be picking the next eat out venue was picked. And so the Eat-Out Club was born! This concept is awesome for various reasons:

To The Bat-Mobile!
For us, every month is an adventure! We’ve been everywhere; from the  northern suburbs to the “dodgy” south and everywhere in between. From the oldest pub in the city, to the middle of the city all the way to the Capital City! Waze has become our closest friend and Uber is a close contender!

NomNomNomNomNom!
Our mouths have been to some amazing countries as well. We’ve tried French, Portuguese, Greek, Mexican (my favourite!!),Indian (love!!) and the likes. Sometimes our mouths stay home. We have steak so rare they mooo, ribs that leave your face stained and your heart content or the creamiest pastas in existance! We’ve had desserts you can set on fire, marshmellows piled on a pizza bread and, once, good old fashioned custard and jelly!

Good friends
At the end of the day, adventures are no fun without someone to manage the car tunes! Adventures are boring to take alone, and so we get lost so our ninjas can come to our rescue – as ninjas do! Without laughter and chatter and hugs and holding hands and love, even the best cuisine is bland and tasteless. I diarise Eat Out. I carefully pick out an outfit as though I’m going on a first date! We talk about our jobs, our studies, our workouts. We plan weekends away, random braais and Christmas lunches. We share books, recipes, rituals, wifi codes, gym challenges and so many nifty tricks that make us better humans!

I’ve grown to love these people. They fill my heart with warmth, my mouth with laughter and my spirit with contentment. This is my village.

Working it out

I’ve done 2 4 week challenges on my own in the past 8 weeks. I’ve loved the exercising and the increased time I’ve had to go the gym. I think I’m gonna keep doing the self training thing.

image

I found this Nike app where you can find workouts based on your fitness level as well as your target areas. The ones above are the ones I’ve downloaded and would like to try. From what I can tell,  they are a combination of targeted areas as well as full body work outs. Here’s the plan:

Be consistant
I have heard it said many a times by those more disciplined than I that one needs to be training a consistant amount of times per week. Also, one needs to work out for 45 minutes. It seems to be a good idea to combine
“leaner legs”and “ab burner” to make it half an hour then add 15 minutes on the treadmill. Then I do the other 2 on 2 other days and make the fourth day Nova and spinning.

Eat healthier
This is my vice! I hate the idea of not enjoying the food that I eat in the name of losing weight and ristricting myself to eating leaves and drinking water; my soul cringes at the thought! I have found that keeping my portions small is very hard as well as keeping to my water intake and good eating habits over the weekend! It’s like my body knows what I am doing and is holding on to every particle of body fat! It also doesn’t help that it’s the holiday season and I’m heading to the homelands for 2 weeks!

I know these things need to happen so that I can get maximum results, and as Mr Elephant always said; it’s all about a healthy body and mind. I want to be that guy! Also I want to be able to do this:

Look like a Beauty. Train like a Beast

I like this stage in my working out. I’m fit enough that I can try different things for enjoyment and to test how much further I can go.  Here’s a number of things I’ve tried.

image

Did you know that at 8am every Saturday morning people all over the world are doing 5k runs in a park? What a movement! Kevin Hart, one of my favourite comedians and actors, does this thing called #RunWithHart . He’s coming to Jozi next year and I wanna join him on a park run here! I’ve taken to social media to try and catch his attention. May my voice be loud enough for him to hear!

image

I’ve told you before that I’ve started training on my own. I moved on to do the upper arm and back challenge over the past 3 weeks. I found this one a great deal easier than the butt and leg challenge so I added some of my own flavour to it. It is said by those much fitter than I that training is about consistant 45 minute workouts. My routine is to run on the treadmill for 15 minutes followed by the chosen routine for that day. I am required to do 3 rounds of my routine with a minute break in between. Today I decided to do skipping during that minute seeing that it is so easy, right? Shut. The. Front. Door! Skipping is not for sissies, yo! But I lived through it!

image

I also decided to push myself even more. Today, I upped my dumbbell weight to 5kg  that’s gonna hurt tomorrow! And to add pain to injury, it is no longer acceptable to do 1 min planks. Yesterday I started doing 1 minute 30 second plank! I’m going to die tomorrow!

image

So there you have it! I think I’m doing a great deal of exploring!  My body just keeps suprising me and most of all, I’m enjoying every bit of it!

How to Swim with Dolphins

image

I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I agreed to this! It was more exciting for me that I was going to another country, something I want to do more of, than the swimming with the dolphins bit, but once I was there I knew I had to do it! So here is how you swim with dolphins, everybody!

image

It only looks this romantic after years and years of practise – ask Courteney,  our resident mermaid and she’ll tell you that the first time is always a blunder.
Think about the first time you ever tried anything. Did it go according to plan? If it did, I’d like to walk a mile in your shoes because all I remember about my first swim is my panicked breath in my own ears  as I tried to fathom that I was bobbing IN THE MIDDLE OF THE OCEAN! Luckily, the dolphins pulled a no show – playing and having sex all day must be exhausting – I say luckily because being stood up gave me a chance to get used to the gear and bobbing IN THE MIDDLE OF THE OCEAN! If they showed I may have died! I am not a strong  swimmer ( black girl problems!) And the ocean is something that you gaze at from the safety of the beach, hotel room or ship, it is not intended to be bobbed in! I did get comfortable with the water and also learned that I am prone to feel sick when in a rubber boat that sways at the rythym of the swelling waves!

So when the day came when the dollies did show, I was kind of ready. I had prepared myself with motion sickness pills and a realistic understanding of how it would be. It helped that we had to move quickly once we were out there. There was no time to be afraid or to second guess what I was about to do. I saw fins about 20 metres ahead of me, everything went dead quiet and for a moment I realised that I was swimming in the same water as these guys. I was in awe. I heard them click as I ducked my head under the water trying to get a closer look at them – So apparently, they are Xhosa!

Lessons learned? Life’s too short to be afraid. Take a leap and just do the thing! It won’t be smooth, but in retrospect you won’t remember the blunders but the moments that took your breath away.

Hi, my name is Nolo and I am here in an attempt to start afresh. I’ve been blogging for many years but on a different platform. I’ve always been one for having all my eggs in one basket, you see, and beacuse I have a gmail account it was only natural to have a Google blog, but it’s time to throw caution to the wind! The world is full of possibilities and I go to seek the great perhaps – or something like that.

I just came back from a 4 day holiday in Mozambique! It was truly beautiful! The last trip I made to another country was to Lesotho on a mission trip almost 10 years ago and now I’m starting to itch for adventure and maybe escape. I’m hoping that one day I will escape for good….

image

Probably the most memorable thing about Mozambique was the water. Our tent houses were in the bushes and we could not see the sea – yes, I did that – but one could hear the waves crash into each other long before you saw them -what blissful sleep. It’s August and I’m accustomed to freezing Cape Town water, but this water, this water was cold but did not cut to the bone. It invited you to dip your toe in just one more time until finally it was pleasant to the skin mmmmh

I think my next holiday needs to be at a beach…. but where, oh where…..
