Fibo Fitness and Wellness Festival

I’m starting to feel more and more at home in fitness spaces and I love it!

This weekend found me at Fibo Health and Fitness, Wellness Festival. I was really there to support my friend as per the friendship aggreement but I got much more than I expected!

Endless stalls ranging from food to active wear and equipment and everything in between! I planked for vouchers, sweated out in 30-minute classes and tried out all kinds of healthy shakes and food.

So I finally tried out Piloxing, guys and it was so much more than I expected! It’s not just punching into the air. The piloxing gloves, which have a little added weight, ensure that you get more out of those punches. 2 sets, and I understood why the instructors have such lean arms! It was only a 30-minute demo class but I was sweating hard by the end!

And it doesn’t stop there. My legs were put to the test with standing leg raises that also demand a tightened core to maximise effectiveness. I would love to have this class on a regular basis at my own gym! It’s a must try for men and women!

Shout out to Tania and her team for a great demo. You’re an amazing instructor full of fun and so much energy and it’s evident that you and your team believing in what you’re doing! Thank you!

Thank you for popping erbody! It’s always a pleasure to have you hear! Have an awesome week😘

Piloxing

When it comes to fitness, I’m down for whatever, to be honest. I’m here for the results and being able to push myself beyond limits I thought were impenetrable! It feels good to be able to wear whatever I want and not to feel uncomfortable with my body! It feels good to catch a glimpse, at the perfect angle and the perfect lighting, a glimpse of what appears to be a 6 pack! Man, it feels so good to feel good in my own skin!

So my very good friend Lian started doing this thing called Piloxing and from what I could see on her Instagram, it is a lot and she looks better and better every day and sounds happier and happier everytime we catch up – I was curious!

Because I like things and Lian and I will find any opportunity to see each other since she is based in Cape Town, she’s roped me in for a Piloxing event taking place in Joburg next weekend!

I need to do some more research and preparation but based on this Piloxing video and other research I’ve done, Piloxing is pilates meets boxing -and your girl has her work cut out for her! Listen, it’s not child’s play and I felt every muscle in my body flex at just the sight of the gruelling work out that is in store for me next weekend! It’s going to be hectic! Pray for me! I’ll have more details for you during the week and maybe even a giveaway!

In the meantime, I’m going to put in some real work this week to get me ready, so wish me luck!

Thank you for popping in today! It’s always good to have you hear! Have an amazing week😘

Beast Mode

Hey everyone!

Another Wednesday has rolled by and I’m so glad you’re here!

I’ve had a pretty good and productive week with a wealth of new knowledge. How has your week been so far?!

Tonight I wanna talk about gym life; one of my favourite things to do for fun and also for that dream body! For me, working out and being fit is the only thing that makes me feel good in my own skin. I hope to do it for as long as my body will allow!

I don’t sweat, I sparkle!

So, a few weeks ago I started doing parkrun. Check out my post about that here. I must say, it humbled me! I tell you, just because you can run a lot of kilometres on the treadmill does not mean the ground will be easier. On the treadmill, your legs are merely responding to the pull of the belt. I barely lift my legs to get going. The ground, on the other hand, is merciless! You are completely on your own and propelling yourself forward is all on you! I definately did more sweating than sparkling out there!

Look like a beauty train like a beast!

I refused to be discouraged ( even though I actually was)! So, this week I took to running outside on Monday and today to get myself ready for Saturday. I got some tips from fellow parkrunners who had to slow down to my granny pace and push me to keep going – capitalise on the downhills and straights by picking up the pace a little bit and breathe as much as possible through your nose.

Monday was gruelling but today went much better. I’m proud of myself for showing up and giving it my best and I can’t wait to see how I do this coming Saturday! I’ll let you know how it goes🙂

So I guess the lesson is very clear: Nothing that we accomplish comes easily or without hard work. Sometimes you have to go back to the drawing board and replan; It’s part of what makes life such an adventure!

Anyway, be good to yourself this week and give everything you do your very best! Thank you for popping in and I’ll see you on Sunday😘

Don’t Give up

I really threw in the towel – I mean tossed it across the room threw it – then a couple of things happened.

Alex works out like a boss! Like all the the time and she looks all kinds of ripped and cut! To be fair, she is a personal trainer who does this all day every day. For the rest of us who don’t have the time, a body like hers is only in our dreams! But Alex makes it accessible.  She’s always like, ” All you need to do is keep you portions small and train for 45 minutes at a consistant 3 -5 times a week” ( I’ve mixed some of this with what the Elephant preaches- he says I need more work!). You should really check her out on instagram though, I love the narratives she gives all her pictures. She makes me wanna get my gym gear on and get my butt to working out!  Thanks Alex!

Sidebar- This is punny! – speaking of instagram, my account is private because I’m a teacher ( an explanation for another blog, I think) and the only requests for followers I ever receive are from people who have just hopped onto the bandwagon ooor new friends I’ve made ( yes, I still make new friends!) But the past few days I have been getting requests from fitness pages with inspirational quotes about working out.

So here I am, 800 kilometres away from all my gym wear and I’m amped to get back into gear. I’ve borrowed my sister’s running shoes, pants and sports bra ( I am still not convinced that we are the same cup size! I want a third opinion!) And I have my Nike training app. It is on in the morning!

Unfortunately, they don’t tell you that when you go to bed with a plan in your head, sleep doesn’t come easily….

Sip Water

Sidebar – Sip water refers to a phrase used by a spinning class instructor when encouraging us to take a quick rest. Gym Bunny and I found it amusing at the time and it soon became an all the time hashtag for visits to the gym.

What a rude awakening I got 2 months ago! It seems that in my attempt to maintain my commitment to the gym by having no game plan besides going 3 times a week, I’m back to the original weight I was when Gym and I first got together!

It’s my own fault, I suppose; well, me and the daily chocolate and my arrogance thinking that it would not catch up with me! I know myself to be a commitmentphobe and thought the only way I’d stick  to gym was if no plan was in place. Like the successful abandonment of the forbidden fruit, I had to change my mindset.

Mr Elephant always said  that training by yourself produces the best results and he saw no point in attending classes even if it was on a regular basis. He suggested that it is important to burn more than you eat and stay as hydrated as possible before training. I decided to try his methods. Mr Elephant has also said that people are horrible overall so I’m the first to admit that he is not the preacher of this gospel.

Training on your own

I’ve managed to get my hands on a few 30 day challenges. Butt and leg came first and required me to exercise 4 days a week. I’ve enjoyed this alot. I like the flexibility. I can go to gym any day of the week at any time of the day. I don’t have to worry about missing a class! Training on my own has helped me not to compare myself with other people and to fully rely on myself to get through a session – it’s really all in the mind. There was no granny next to me mimicking the same moves that I could compare myself to. I could not use the other people in the class who stop to take a break as my own cop out to rest. It was just me and that squat or lunge or plank or all of them!

I also like not having to be in sync with someone else’s schedule which is just as well because gym bunny one has moved to another gym and gym bunny two has moved to another city. I’m in full control of my own workout and my own improvement.

Keep hydrated

By the time I get to the gym in the afternoon, I ( on a good day) will have consumed about seven glasses of water. The bright side is that it keeps me cool during  hot days. The not so bright side is that I pee all the time which, all teachers know, is not on our list of  daily priorities. Also, I sweat like you can’t believe during my workout, even when I’m just doing wieghts. You have to take the good in with the bad, though, so I won’t complain about that.

Burn more than you eat

This, I have not yet mastered, but it’s a work in progress. Because I drink so much water, I have very little time for fizzy drinks on top of that. I’ve even changed my poison of choice to whiskey and soda. I eat cous cous instead of rice or mielie meal and I eat all kinds of meat. The best part though has been the double cream plain yoghurt! I have died and gone to heaven! This stuff is the best thing I have ever put in my belly! Keep it coming!

Well there you have it! That’s what I’ve been trying. The results are slow but I am in no hurry. I’ve come to believe that  enjoying what you do is more important than pushing or worrying about the results. They will come as long as you are consistant in your training and your diet. I don’t always follow these steps with precision and I’m sure there is still much more that I can do for even better results, but I commend myself for the bravery to change up what I’d already been doing and to work at being as good as I can be.
